Married Metals Kaleidoscopes 2024

How to Care for Your Kaleidoscope

Congratulations on your new kaleidoscope! Kaleidoscopes are interactive pieces of art that deserve a little care to keep them looking their best. Below are some helpful tips for maintaining your kaleidoscope and keeping it shining.

Brass Maintenance

Your kaleidoscope is crafted with brass, which naturally oxidizes over time. This process can give the brass a darker, antique patina, adding to its unique beauty. However, if you prefer a bright and shiny finish or simply want to remove smudges or fingerprints, you can easily polish it.

Colorized Brass Warning

If your kaleidoscope is made of colorized brass, do not use any metal cleaner, as it will remove the color and damage the finish. Instead, use a dry, clean cloth to gently buff away any fingerprints or dirt.

Polishing Your Kaleidoscope

If your kaleidoscope is made from uncoated brass, you can use any metal polishing cloth to buff it. For the best results, I recommend using Simichrome Polish, which works wonders on brass. To polish:

  1. Use a clean, soft cloth and apply a very thin layer of Simichrome Polish to the brass. You don’t need much—a little goes a long way.
  2. Gently rub the polish onto the brass in a circular motion.
  3. After applying, use another clean, soft cloth to buff the brass until it shines.

General Cleaning

To maintain your kaleidoscope’s appearance between polishes, use a dry, soft cloth to remove any fingerprints or dust. Avoid using water or abrasive cleaners, as they may damage the finish or the internal components of your kaleidoscope.

Cleaning the Cast Acrylic Object Chamber

The object chamber of your kaleidoscope is made of cast acrylic. To clean it:

  1. Use a soft, damp cloth with a mild soap solution to gently wipe the surface.
  2. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or rough cloths, as they may scratch the acrylic.
  3. After cleaning, use a dry, soft cloth to gently buff the surface.

You can also use Novus Plastic Polish to clean the object chamber. follow the instructions in the kit. It’s a 3-part cleaning system. Only use #3 if the acrylic is extremely scratched. If it’s only got fingerprints Steps #1 & #2 are enough.

Enjoy the Beauty

Part of the charm of brass is the way it evolves with time, gaining character as it ages. Whether you choose to let it develop a natural patina or keep it shining brightly, your kaleidoscope will continue to be a source of beauty and wonder.
